A How-To Guide for Bringing Along Rookie QBs in the NFL

As an NFL general manager who's just spent a high draft pick on a rookie quarterback, you have an employee who's going to make you look like a genius for the next 15 years or make you look like an idiot and get you fired in three.

Congratulations!

Whether it's the former or the latter depends partly on the work you and your staff have done in evaluating that player's college tape, All-Star Game performances and pre-draft workouts.

Much of a rookie quarterback's success, though, is determined by how you bring him along.

Here's a handy guide to getting the most out of your young signal-caller.

Step 1: Match the Player to the Coach

When you and your staff were doing all that scouting, film-watching, grading, interviewing and debating, you'd better have involved your coach and offensive coordinator.

There's no such thing as a can't-miss prospect, and quarterbacks so talented they'll excel regardless of system are vanishingly rare. The better prospect isn't always the better player; getting the "best" prospect is not nearly as important as getting the player who is most right.

Step 2: Sit or Play?

From the instant a quarterback is drafted, the debate rages on local sports talk radio and team message boards: Should he sit, or should he play?

The old-school football cavemen say rookie quarterbacks' butts should never leave the bench during their first season, regardless of how good they are or how bad the team is. The new-school football video-game crowd thinks if a quarterback doesn't set the world on fire as a rookie, he never will.

The truth isn't somewhere in the middle. The truth is, the right approach differs for every quarterback and every team.

If you've got an elite veteran quarterback, you've got your choice made for you: You can't bench your starter for a rookie.

Though the Ravens won last week

Penalty yardage Though the Ravens won last week, it came with a lot of mistakes. Baltimore made their share of mistakes at Tampa Bay to the tune of a league-high 122 penalty yards. I don't care if it's preseason—that's unacceptable. Sure, you're going to make mistakes but that many at any time is not right. Look for the Ravens to at least cut that number in half tonight. Points scored While the Ravens lead the NFL so far in penalty yardage, they are also tied for the NFL lead (with Buffalo) for points scored per game (44), which is obviously the most important stat of them all. I know not every teams played their starters very long (some key starters didn't play at all last week). But players that don't start still compete. This shows the kind of depth Baltimore has and is continuing to develop. Third down conversions A reason for that high scoring output is the Ravens' ability to convert on third down. Baltimore is tied for sixth in the league (with Oakland) with a 50 percent third down conversion rate this preseason. Flacco was 2-of-4 for 22 yards and one interception when he passed on third downs last week, so he didn't get that many chances to figure out who his new go-to receiver might be. But when a team converts 50 percent of its third downs, personnel is not a problem. Have patience. Maybe Ray Rice will be the "third down guy." You never know. Miles already has suspended Hill, the team’s leading rusher last season and a potential All-American this fall, and has said he won’t make a permanent decision until the legal process is complete. Two years ago Miles kept quarterback Jordan Jefferson after Jefferson was charged with simple battery. He missed the first half of the season, but returned and played in the Tigers’ SEC championship run. That run was complicated by Jefferson’s return. Jarrett Lee already had led the Tigers to cheap nfl womens jerseys ranked teams Oregon, Mississippi State, West Virginia and Florida, but eventually was replaced by Jefferson in the lineup. The move eventually imploded on Miles, when Jefferson played his two worst games of the season in the SEC championship game and the BCS title game. LSU was good enough to overcome Jefferson in a win over Georgia; but not good enough against Alabama in the national championship game.
